It is no doubt it is an exciting time in the MARITIME INDUSTRY. With inevitable changes looming due to upcoming regulations and changing landscape of the industry, most companies are getting ready for challenges ahead by exploring advanced solutions.
In this article, I will highlight a couple of the latest and greatest that have recently been achieved in this industry.
- GLOBAL COVERAGE OF AUTONOMOUS SHIPS – Rolls-Royce Marine (RRM) is making sure their autonomous vessels are connected wherever they are with the help of Iridium’s next generation L-band satellite broadband service Iridium Certus. By integrating this service into RRM’s shipping intelligence solutions, ship operators will be certain to have global connection, whether they sail on safe ports, polar regions or in the middle of stormy seas. This is due to Iridium’s LEO satellite network which consist 66 satellites and covers the globe. Since the form-factor antennas and terminals have no moving parts, they are harder to damage and resilient enough to withstand unpalatable conditions on our seas. Technology and systems of this nature brings the decade held thoughts of impossibilities to reality.
- 3D PRINTING – A leading solution provider, IVALDI Group in collaboration with WILHELMSEN, the worlds largest maritime network has launched a 3D printing service for ships spare parts. By introducing additive manufacturing to Wilhelmsen’s Ship Service in Singapore. Invalid will be able to provide 3D printed parts and maritime equipments for over a 100 vessels per day! This will no doubt increase the availability of parts, reduce cost, more environmental friendly and most efficient as items will be produced as and when there is a need for them. This printing technology also allows for easier customisation and versatility by using diverse range of materials. this great new venture marks a milestone in additive manufacturing for the obvious increasing demand of this service in the maritime industry.
- BLOCKCHAIN BASED SHIPPING – According to an official press release by Lloyd’s Register (LR), this technical, business services organisation and a maritime classification society has developed a model of Blockchain-Powered class register for ships. By partnering with Applied Blockchain, the company managed to blockchain technology to register ships into class. Once successfully launched, the register service will strengthen trust between merchants and underwriters, offering consistency in services and allowing sharing of data in real time. An excellent innovative channel to bring the original LR’s “Register of Ships” which started in 1764 to the 21st century.
